Fly Strike in Rabbits

Fly strike (Myiasis) is caused by the blue bottle fly and related fly species which lay eggs on living rabbits. The bottle flies are attracted to damp fur, urine, faeces or the odour of rabbit scent glands.  They lay their eggs around the rabbit's rear end where they hatch into maggots that eat into the flesh releasing toxins in the process. Fly strike in domestic rabbits is a common problem throughout the summer months.

Flies will strike any healthy animal, but generally those that have a wet and dirty groin area are most at risk. Any rabbit which is unable to clean itself properly may become infected, this includes obese rabbits, rabbits with urinary problems, elderly or arthritic rabbits, long-coated breeds, and rabbits with teeth problems who are unable to groom themselves. Wounds also provide a perfect place for the fly to lay its eggs, as the odour and moisture from the flesh attracts them.

If you find maggots on or around your rabbit’s anus immediate veterinary attention is required, the maggots will have to be physically removed, the area cleaned, treated and dried. Antibiotic therapy may be started if a secondary bacterial infection has occurred.

All dogs and cats over the age of seven are eligible for a health check with our nurse. This half hour consult costs € 15 and all health issues and concerns will be discussed. Any necessary follow up treatment will be offered at a discounted rate. With this service we hope to identify and treat conditions early on and elongate your pet’s lifespan.
